  • Ariadne Labs and Amplifire Develop Online Training on Serious Illness Care Program COVID-19

BOSTON, MA., Sep. 03, 2020 /Ariadne Labs/ — Ariadne Labs, a joint center for health systems innovation at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and Amplifire, an innovative knowledge engineering and training platform, today announced the launch of an online educational module developed to introduce clinicians to Ariadne Labs’ Serious Illness Care Program’s COVID-19 Conversation Guide. This collaboration brings Ariadne Labs’ tools and content expertise into a unique online format, allowing for further spread of the toolkit to clinicians nationwide.

“People can become very sick very quickly with COVID-19. As COVID-19 spread, clinicians needed to engage in difficult conversations to help patients and families understand the illness and make complex care decisions in a way that was both kind and effective,” said Erik Fromme, MD, Faculty on the Serious Illness Care Program. “Building on nearly a decade of experience and research in serious illness communication, our team set out to address this need, developing the COVID-19 Conversation Guide and a suite of tools to support learning and implementation.”

Amplifire is a virtual learning platform that detects and corrects confidently held misinformation and knowledge gaps across a variety of industries, including health care.

“It is a privilege working with Ariadne to address the critical topic of serious illness care. Their wisdom on compassionate patient-centered care combined with Amplifire’s adaptive learning platform is a powerful combination in the midst of COVID-19. We look forward to growing our collaboration to disseminate their knowledge of serious illness care to providers across the country and around the world,” said Bob Burgin, CEO of Amplifire.

Amplifire’s health care education tools aim to help clinicians improve performance by identifying and addressing uncertainty, knowledge gaps, and misinformation, leading to reductions in clinician error and improved patient outcomes. The Amplifire Healthcare Alliance brings together a broad range of health care systems working to drive better decision making in health care.

“At Ariadne Labs, we’re committed to innovating for simple, scalable solutions that drive better care for every patient, everywhere, every time,” said Evan Benjamin, MD, Chief Medical Officer of Ariadne Labs. “Through this collaboration, we have the opportunity to expand the reach of our tools to support more clinicians in having important conversations with their patients during this pandemic.”

Ariadne Labs and Amplifire also plan to develop online learning content for additional Ariadne tools from the Serious Illness Care Program, along with material from the Safe Surgery Safe Systems Program.

Additional information about the course and how to access the tool can be found on the Amplifire website.

  • AAMI to Leverage Cognitive Science to Deliver Online Training

ARLINGTON, VA., July 28, 2020 /AAMI/ — Over the last two years, the Association for the Advancement of Medical instrumentation (AAMI) has been transforming and modernizing to better serve members and stakeholders. Now, the organization is announcing a new strategic partnership, one aimed at delivering revolutionary online training.

“We’ve invested heavily in upgrading our education offerings—overhauling core components of our curriculum, investing in new courses and certifications, and launching our state-of-the-art AAMI Center for Excellence to support classroom-based and live-streamed training,” noted Rob Jensen, president and CEO of AAMI. “Now, we’re turning our attention to transforming the delivery of online education. To that end, we are delighted to announce a strategic partnership with Amplifire, the leader in leveraging cognitive science to radically improve training outcomes.”

“This isn’t just about using online learning to drive down the cost curve or facilitate distribution,” said Robert Burroughs, senior vice president of education at AAMI. “It’s about leveraging science to do something we couldn’t even imagine doing 20 years ago – in the classroom or online.”

The platform was developed by neuroscientists and cognitive experts from Harvard and six leading academic institutions. Amplifire’s strategy of using memory “triggers” to  promote rapid learning and long-term retention will now be harnessed for crucial industry training.

“This is a game-changer for medical device manufacturers, and can be used for compliance education with QA and RA staff, and with educating customers on how to safely and effectively use medical devices,” said Dr. Bradley Schoener, AAMI vice president of innovation.

“Even better, Amplifire has made the invisible visible,” added Burroughs. “It’s now possible to get an accurate snapshot of your workforce’s competency before and after training. I’ve been focused on organizational effectiveness for 20 years and this is the first time I’ve felt we have the power to really do something radically different and better than we could before the advent of online learning.”

Healthcare professionals are already using Amplifire in their online learning, as pictured above. Soon, quality assurance and regulatory affairs staff in the healthcare industry will be offered that same level of quality learning.

As a part of the strategic partnership, AAMI will become a member of the Amplifire Healthcare Alliance, leveraging AAMI expertise to add medical device and health technology courses to the Alliance network. In addition, AAMI will work directly with medical device manufacturers, independent service organizations, and healthcare delivery organizations to develop custom solutions utilizing the Amplifire platform.

“AAMI is the de facto world leader driving the safe and effective use of healthcare devices,” said Bob Burgin, CEO of Amplifire. “Their standards are used worldwide in manufacturing, servicing, and healthcare delivery; their education programs set the bar for quality; and AAMI members, like members of our own Science Board, are thought-leaders in their field. We can’t wait to see what they can do with the Amplifire platform at their disposal.”

  • HealthcareSource Partners with Amplifire Healthcare Alliance, Now Distributing Infection Prevention and Control (COVID-19) Essentials Course

WOBURN, Mass., April 3, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — HealthcareSource, the leading provider of talent management solutions for the healthcare industry, is partnering with Amplifire, an innovative knowledge engineering and training platform, to distribute its Infection Prevention and Control Essentials – Rapid Refresher course to healthcare organizations across the U.S.

HealthcareSource now offering a course created by Amplifire in collaboration with ECRI and leading academic institutions, which identifies known areas of PPE misuse and provides a refresher on how to properly use PPE that will help save lives.

The course is designed to help frontline caregivers exposed to COVID-19 refresh their knowledge of proper PPE usage to better avoid catching the virus themselves or transmitting it to others. Unlike many other training courses available today, the course identifies known areas of PPE misuse while also directly addressing the consequences of PPE shortages.

“HealthcareSource is committed to providing healthcare organizations with resources and a learning infrastructure to educate and train their staff during this critical time. Partnering with Amplifire provides us with a scalable solution that will help healthcare organizations with emergency preparedness and infection control,” said Michael Grossi, CEO of HealthcareSource.

While frontline healthcare workers are fighting COVID-19, the proper usage of PPE is instrumental in keeping the spread to a minimum. But according to a 2018 study, 73% of caregivers failed to take appropriate precautions against infectious agent transmission. This course was created to help frontline workers identify potential errors when managing PPE – based on real data – and lessen their exposure to the virus.

Built with leading infection control and safety experts from ECRI and other academic institutions, this course will arm caregivers for the ongoing battle with COVID-19. Importantly, the course acknowledges that PPE supplies are dwindling and highlights effective equipment workarounds that can be broadly disseminated. Guidelines for PPE use will be frequently reviewed and adjusted, with course refreshers delivered to all caregivers.

“As devoted as our caregivers are, we cannot simply trust that they have the right knowledge to protect themselves and the patients with whom they interact while dealing with COVID-19. By quickly validating and refreshing critical knowledge, healthcare providers and frontline staff will have greater confidence and competence at this critical time,” noted Bob Burgin, Amplifire’s CEO.

“Amplifire’s patented learning algorithms, knowledge analytics, and diagnostic capabilities, allow healthcare organizations to rapidly refresh and validate frontline healthcare workers’ infection prevention and control knowledge to reduce risk and improve safety during this crisis,” said Mr. Grossi. “Our partnership with Amplifire furthers our commitment to support healthcare organizations in their fight to combat the coronavirus pandemic.”

For more information, register for our webinar on Thursday, April 9th at 2:00 p.m. ET to learn more about the course and how to enroll.

  • Amplifire Offers Infection Prevention and PPE Shortage Training to Protect Caregivers

BOULDER, Colo., March 30, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Amplifire today released its Infection Prevention and Control and COVID-19 Essentials – Rapid Refresher course. This new course is designed for frontline caregivers who are fighting to minimize the spread of the outbreak by not acquiring the SARS-CoV-2 virus themselves or transmitting it to others. In contrast to many other training resources that have recently surfaced, this course focuses on known areas of misunderstanding regarding use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), while also directly addressing the consequences of PPE shortages.

Built with leading infection control and safety experts from ECRI and academic institutions, this course is meant to arm caregivers for the ongoing battle. It addresses measures that caregivers sometimes forget. For example, a 2018 study on infectious agent transmission in hospitals found 238 failures in 325 observations related to PPE.

Importantly, the course acknowledges that PPE supplies are dwindling and highlights effective equipment workarounds that are being broadly disseminated. Guidelines for PPE use will be frequently reviewed and adjusted, with course refreshers delivered to all caregivers.

Bob Burgin, CEO of Amplifire said that, “Knowledge gaps occur every day in healthcare settings. They will be starkly revealed during this crisis. We cannot take on a pandemic effectively if our frontline healthcare workers are unknowingly part of the spreading mechanism, or not able to come to work because they are sick.”

According to Dr. Brent James, Chairman of Amplifire’s Clinical Innovation Advisory Board and a recognized expert in healthcare quality and safety, “Passing out informational flyers and PowerPoint decks, or reminding caregivers about proper PPE usage will not suffice. There is not enough time for classroom training or lectures. Even if there was, we know that such training approaches are not effective. We must turn to the most advanced knowledge transfer tools being used by leading health systems for critical training in infection-oriented areas such as Sepsis, C-diff, and CLABSI. With such tools we can rapidly validate that a frontline caregiver understands the most effective infection control practices and the most effective PPE workarounds as supplies run low during this emergency.”

Dr. Brigitta Mueller, Executive Director of Patient Safety, Risk, and Quality at ECRI, a collaborator who helped design the course noted that, “By rapidly refreshing and validating vital knowledge about infection, healthcare providers and frontline staff will have greater confidence and competence at this unprecedented time.”

Amplifire is offering Infection Prevention and Control and COVID-19 Essentials at no cost to its Healthcare Alliance Members now using either the “Safety and Quality Essentials” or the “Compliance” libraries. Other healthcare systems can learn more about accessing the course here. It can be deployed directly to any size workforce through a link in an email or by using an organization’s learning management system.

  • Olympus and Amplifire Jointly Develop Digital Learning Platform Aimed at Improving Patient Safety

CENTER VALLEY, Pa., and BOULDER, Colo., Feb. 24, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Olympus Corporation of the Americas and Amplifire today announced a partnership to improve patient safety with a new digital learning platform designed to improve duodenoscope reprocessing by technicians. The new digital learning platform will be specifically designed for reprocessing the Olympus TJF-Q180V duodenoscope, which is a complex medical endoscope used to perform endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).

In 2016, Amplifire co-developed an electronic training course for reprocessing technicians on the exact steps for cleaning and disinfecting duodenoscopes. The course proved effective in helping technicians master the details of the multi-stage reprocessing process and overcome misinformation. Olympus has subsequently created a new course for the TJF-Q180V duodenoscope, offered electronically and based on its most current instructions for use, that focuses on the reprocessing steps during which mistakes often occur. The course is being made available through Amplifire to Olympus duodenoscope customers in the U.S., at no additional cost.

Amplifire transforms traditional training into an engaging, effective learning experience. According to learning and memory researcher Will Thalheimer, memory is extremely variable between different learners. Memory is also highly dependent on the tools and techniques used within a chosen training technology. Amplifire addresses these challenges with a patented process built from insights in cognitive science that increase levels of attention, motivation, and confidence, leading to greater human performance, especially when working under pressure. Leveraging Amplifire’s patented learning algorithms, knowledge analytics, and diagnostic capabilities, the new learning modules aim to improve consistency and outcomes in duodenoscope reprocessing.

“As a market leader in endoscopy, Olympus continues to be responsive to the changing needs of our customers to ensure patient safety,” said Kevin Mancini, Vice President for Marketing, Endoscopy Division, Olympus America, Inc. “Through this exciting new partnership with Amplifire, we are offering, at no cost, leading-edge education and training to ensure the highest levels of quality and safety in reprocessing our duodenoscopes. This effort is all about enhancing the capability of technicians and the wellbeing of patients.”

Amplifire CEO Bob Burgin noted, “We are excited to be joining forces with Olympus and their global effort to improve patient safety when using these essential life-saving devices. This partnership aligns with our core values and goals, as we aim for improved patient safety through clinical knowledge engineering. In a world of rapidly evolving bacterial threats to patient wellbeing, Olympus is united with us in helping healthcare organizations elevate technical performance and patient safety.”

  • Amplifire Meets with World’s Most Prestigious Learning and Memory Experts

Boulder, Colo. — August 2, 2019 — Amplifire, the proven learning platform that delivers meaningful results for many leading corporate and educational companies, hosted some of the world’s most prominent cognitive psychologists and pedagogical scientists at its annual Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) meeting, July 29–31, 2019. These researchers convened as part of an ongoing effort to apply their findings into scalable technology for the learning and development market.

Amplifire’s prestigious SAB contributes to, reviews, and validates the methodology and algorithms of Amplifire’s software, keeping the organization at the forefront of scientific advancement in learning and memory.

“With guidance from our SAB, Amplifire surveys the research literature for triggers that are shown to switch on the learning circuits in the brain that cause long term memory,” said Charles Smith, co-founder and Chief Research Officer for the company. “We then work to figure out how to turn the most effective triggers into techniques in software that cause the process of learning to speed up, and the product of memory to become more durable.”

These scientists joined the SAB because they believe in the data-driven approach Amplifire takes to learning. The chair of the SAB, UCLA’s Dr. Robert Bjork, reminisced that numerous educational software companies had approached their lab. In each case, he said, it was clear that they were simply looking for an endorsement rather than actually applying any findings. Dr. Elizabeth Bjork added that “Amplifire was different. They’d actually read our research papers, and understood them.”

    Amplifire’s SAB members include:

    • Robert Bjork Ph.D., and Elizabeth Bjork, Ph.D., of the Bjork Learning and Forgetting Lab at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA)
    • H Chad Lane, Ph.D., from the University of Illinois
    • Richard Mayer, Ph.D., from the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB)
    • Henry Roediger, Ph.D., and Kathleen McDermott, Ph.D., from the Washington University in St. Louis Memory Lab
    • Daniel Schacter, Ph.D., from Harvard University’s Schacter Memory Lab
    • Bob Birnbaum, M.D., from Partners Health in Boston

During the 2019 meeting with executives from Amplifire, the SAB members:

    • Presented their latest research.
    • Discussed what’s on the horizon in terms of new research, experiments, and findings for learning and education from the scientific community.
    • Evaluated and made recommendations for current and future product features.
    • Examined the role of artificial intelligence in the learning platform.

“We are so fortunate to have this prestigious board to not only validate the work that we do, but to also feed in to our future roadmap and product improvements,” said Nick Hjort, Senior VP of Product and Software Development.   “I can think of no better aid in helping us stay true to the science and making sure that Amplifire is the most effective learning tool on the market today.”

  • Dr. Brent James to Chair the Clinical Innovation Advisory Board of the Amplifire Healthcare Alliance

BOULDER, Colo., July 30, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — Amplifire is pleased to announce that Brent James, MD, MStat, will serve as Chairman of the Amplifire Healthcare Alliance Clinical Innovation Advisory Board. Dr. James has long been recognized internationally for his work in clinical quality improvement, patient safety and the infrastructure that underlies successful improvement efforts.

In a recent meeting with the ten system Alliance members, Dr. James stated, “I first ran into Amplifire several years ago, and was deeply impressed with the learning model behind it. We then built out a Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infection course in the platform and saw very strong performance in reducing incidents.”

Bob Burgin, Amplifire CEO and Founder of the Healthcare Alliance noted, “I have followed Brent’s work since To Err is Human was published nearly twenty years ago. He brings a level of thought to these challenges that is inspiring to me.”

Dr. James expanded on the paradigm that brought him to chair the Advisory Board, “You take massive amounts of information, load it into clinicians’ heads, and expect those health professionals to somehow correctly deliver it to individual patients. David Eddie, who invented the science behind evidence-based medicine and the term itself, said it nicely: ‘The complexity of modern medicine exceeds the capacity of the unaided expert mind.’”

Dr James continued, “I’ve long held that the real solution is to move it out of human memory and build systems that make it easy to do it right. You need a 2 part solution. You need better underlying systems, but the idea of an expert mind is still essential. It doesn’t go away. What I saw in Amplifire, was a tool that much more accurately, completely and rapidly loaded that knowledge base. It gave us not just the ability to transmit it, it gave us the ability to measure how well we had done that and identify specific areas where things were falling short. I personally believe that this combination of really smart professionals, topically focused and tightly trained around specific issues, in conjunction with effective systems, has the potential to create a care delivery system that would perform far beyond what any of us now believe possible. We have not yet begun to understand how good we can be. ”

Burgin stated, “Brent’s accomplishments in this field are well known and respected, and we are honored that he will be chairing our Healthcare Alliance Innovation Advisory Board. His counsel carries substantial weight.”

Dr. James continued, “As an advisory board, we are a group of scientific experts taking a close look at focused training solutions and their use in real clinical applications. The kinds of questions Bob is asking of us include: Are we evaluating the clinical impact correctly? Are we thinking about this problem in the right way? What are the questions we should really ask, not just of the content but also of the underlying platform? Are we doing it right?”

Dr. James is a Senior Fellow at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) in Boston, MA. He is also a Senior Advisor at the Leavitt Group and a Senior Advisor at Health Catalyst, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He holds faculty appointments at the Stanford University School of Medicine and at several other universities. He was formerly VP and Chief Quality Officer at Intermountain Healthcare.

He has been honored with awards for quality in health care delivery, including (among many others): the John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety & Quality Award – The Joint Commission and the National Quality Forum, 2019; the Deming Cup – Columbia University School of Business, 2011; C. Jackson Grayson Medal, Distinguished Quality Pioneer – American Quality and Productivity Center, 2010; Joint Commission Earnest A. Codman Award, 2006; AHA HRET TRUST Award, 2005; National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) Quality Award, 2005; and the American College of Medical Quality Founders’ Award, 1999.

For 8 out of its first 9 years, Dr. James was named among Modern Physician’s “50 Most Influential Physician Executives in Healthcare.” In Modern Healthcare, he was named among the “100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare” and “25 Top Clinical Informaticists.”
