Management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Back to Courses

Learning Objectives

  • Newer pharmacological agents
  • Medication side effects
  • Insulin considerations

Course Description

Adherence to glucose-lowering medications is low. A report that examined the medication adherence patterns of patients with type 2 diabetes from 2012–2014 found that only 18% of 4,000 patients adhered to their medication regimens over the entire three-year study.

Physicians must become familiar with all the glucose-lowering medication options in order to prescribe medication regimens that address their patient’s specific needs and that patients will actually follow. When prescribing these medications, physicians should always take a comprehensive approach that includes lifestyle considerations and possible modifications.
